Arlington Survey of 600 African-American Sites

Working in collaboration with Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. and architectural historian Penne Sandbeck, Hanbury Preservation Consulting completed a reconnaissance survey of 600 African-American properties in Arlington, Virginia.  In addition to the  historic Arlington View and Nauck neighborhoods, the survey team sought out previously undocumented sites  associated with African American history in Arlington, including schools, churches, and sites associated with the Jim Crow Era and the struggle for Civil Rights.  The survey work supported the preparation of a Multiple Property Document that developed a historic context for the identification, evaluation, and potential designation of sites in Arlington associated with African American History.
