Elizabeth City Historic District Survey Update
Located in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, the Elizabeth City Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. In 1994, the district was expanded. Hanbury Preservation Consulting, working in collaboration with architectural historian Jenny Harper, re-surveyed the district in 2019 to revise the nomination with Additional Documentation including a full inventory with classification of resources, an expanded statement of significance, and new information about architects and builders. The project also included a second boundary increase totaling approximately 27.5 acres which added 45 primary resources to the existing district. The expansion established more consistent, contiguous boundaries, which provides a more cohesive historic district. It also lends context to a period of growth in which Elizabeth City further cemented its role as a hub for finance, trade, commerce, and government within Pasquotank County, and across the greater 16-county Albemarle region. The Additional Documentation and Boundary Increase were listed on the National Register in 2021.
