Hanbury Preservation Consulting facilitated a Strategic Plan for the newly-formed nonprofit, the Petersburg Battlefields Foundation, as part of a larger project with Dinwiddie County, Virginia, funded by the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program. The Foundation supports preservation efforts for battlefield lands associated with the Siege of Petersburg, which span four municipalities and include government and private ownership. The initial research phase of the plan involved assembling a list of battlefield "friends" groups across the country that represented numerous conflicts. Trends in terms of organization, mission, and operation of these groups were documented and shared with the Foundation to provide a context for planning. Hanbury Preservation Consulting then facilitated a retreat for the Foundation to refine its mission and set initial goals for the group considering both internal issues such as administration and operations, as well as external goals to support directly the Foundation's mission.
